Originally published Aug 5, 2014 – am re-running this because I am still in love with these litter mats. I prefer the rectangle ones over the cat face ones, but they are both effective.
I stumbled upon the Moonshuttle cat litter mats on Amazon and they looked so cool that I decided to do a post on Floppycats to see if anyone had them.
Many responded and said they looked cool, but no one had them – and I had mentioned to one reader, Lynn, that I wanted to reach out to the company, but I couldn’t find them online and then she said that they had an email on Amazon. I didn’t even know you could contact a manufacturer through Amazon. So I reached out over the weekend and I think I had the mats on Monday or Tuesday – shipped directly from Korea (where they are made), overnight.
There are two mats – a super size rectangular one and a cat head shape one. They currently come in two different colors – dark grey (it’s really black) and beige. We got both to product test, as you can see in the arrival and final review videos below.
They do a great job catching the litter that kitties shake off their feet when they exit a litter box. The unique honeycomb structure helps to grab the litter and keeping it within the confines of the mat until you empty it out (I show how to empty it out in the final review video below). I’d say that the mats catch about 95% of the litter that used to be scattered about around the litter box.
The mats are super easy to empty out, shake off and vacuum.
Charlie and Trigg use the mats often for stretching out their claws and for clawing in general. The mats have held up to this habitual routine of theirs after using the litter box. I thought they wouldn’t because it’s a foam like material and their claws do cause little cuts in the foam, but it hasn’t been an issue. And well, they have served a dual purpose for collecting litter bits as well as being used as a scratching pad in a way.
Charlie and Trigg never had a problem walking on them – and I have walked on them as well and they feel really good….I was wondering if they might feel different and therefore they wouldn’t want to walk on them, but luckily that wasn’t the case.
These mats do really well with our fine grain clay clumping litter that we use (Precious Cat Ultra) – however, the Okocat cat litter that we are product reviewing, has larger granules that are often times bigger than the “black holes” and therefore the mats aren’t as effective with that larger grain litter. However, I prefer our Precious Cat Ultra, so for our litter box situation, these are a great fit.
