The other day, I got an email from a reader in Spain who had just finished reading our A Ragdoll Kitten Care Guide and decided to send me a suggestion for the book – a Cat Litter Disposal System with Odor Free Pail System. She sent me a link to the LitterLocker II Cat Litter Bin on the Zooplus site in the UK. So I went to check it out and it’s darn near the same design concept as the Litter Genie, which I had first purchased while couponing (I am a crazy couponer) in July 2017.
On January 9, 2018, I went to Petsmart to get some cat litter, and while I was there I saw that the Litter Genie Plus had a mail-in rebate that was going on from Jan 2-Jan 28, 2018. I had sold one of the two (in a garage sale) that I had gotten in July 2017 – so I still needed one for my litter area in the basement…and I saw it as an opportunity to share with Floppycats readers about the mail-in rebate deal.
I published it as soon as I could on our YouTube channel here. However, due to scheduling conflicts, I wasn’t able to share it on our blog until today – which only gives you about 5 days to go and take advantage of this deal. However, if you are reading this after the 28th, I am sure there will be other deals on this, because I did a previous deal on the Litter Genie at Target back in the Summer of 2017.
In the video below, I explain filling out mail-in rebates (which might be too much for some of you – but I have found never to assume that anything is common knowledge). And then I go into how I feel about the Litter Genie.
I never like to give a bad review of a product – so if the negatives of a product outweigh the positives, I usually contact the manufacturer who has sent us a the product to tell them how I feel….and ask if they want me to publish the review. They usually don’t want me to publish it…and frankly, I have learned that sometimes a product becomes a hit in our house months after we review it too – so I also don’t like to post anything negative because that can quickly change.
However, this is really a product that a human reviews – a cat’s reaction or behavior to it doesn’t really matter here (unless my cats were terrified of it).
I do like this enough to have it in my home and have it near my litter boxes – I realized that when I got rid of one of my Litter Genies (after I got the two free from Target last summer), the litter waste smell in my basement was quite worse…that might also have to do with the fact that I had to add two tablespoons of dry food back into Charlie’s diet to get him to eat – and well, that has made his pee and poop more fragrant.
Readers have also been asking me whether or not I am going to review the Litter Genie (because they know I got one at Target last summer). This is more or less a review – because I cover everything in the video that I would in a review…so I guess I am a hypocrite. Anyway, this is my opinion of the Litter Genie.
Pluses of the Litter Genie:
- Does a great job at reducing cat litter waste smell
- Seems to fit in well with my current litter box setups
- Design concept is a good one
Minuses of the Litter Genie:
- The bag refills! How you have to install them….ugh. Just watch the video to see what I mean.
- The bag refills! You have to keep buying them – or hack the thing – and they are costly! I bought a 2-pack at Target for $14.99 – and a 1-pack was on sale at Petsmart for $10.99? Huh? So you definitely have to shop around for pricing or hack the darn thing. They are cheaper in bulk on Amazon, for sure. I did find a video on YouTube showing how to “hack” using the refills.
- The spot on the Litter Genie where you open it up to replace the bags is a mess – I didn’t cut or edit any portion of me trying to tackle that – you can see what a pain in the butt it was. When I have longer nails, it is a wee bit easier, but not much.
- The spot on the Litter Genie where you open up the container to empty the waste and start a new strand of the bag can open up randomly when you lift the Litter Genie (like if I am taking it off the Blackhole cat litter mat to shake litter scatter back into the litter box).
- Litter scoop that comes with it is terrible – even if it was large enough to pick up my cats’ poops or their pee clumps. I can’t stray away from the Litter Lifter, as you all know, it’s my favorite.
Overall, it works for us for what I need – do I wish the design would be improved? YOU BET! And I hope it will be – or I hope we get to review a better cat waste bin, so I can add something great to our cat product shop on the site.
Many readers like this thing and use it – so you might like it just fine – and the things that bother me, might not bother you.
You can buy it online, of course – the Litter Genie and the refills are sold on Amazon. Right now, a Litter Genie system is $14.99 on Amazon, and you can see in the video above that I paid $25.99 for it at Petsmart.
I purchased the Litter Genie on January 9, 2018 and also on Jul 26, 2017
based on a recommendation from a reader.
